Our Mission

Little Woman Home for Animals is a non-profit organization committed to providing lifetime care to abandoned and unwanted animals.  We provide care while actively seeking adoptive homes for healthy animals and meeting the medical needs of animals that are ill or aged.  We do not practice euthanasia.  We attempt to educate the public on the dire need to sterilize pets and the humane treatment of all animals.

  Open House

The time is nearing once again for the Little Woman Home for Animals 2nd Annual Open House.  You’ll want to mark the date, November 12, on your calendar.  If by chance you don’t have anything to use, you might want to pick up our fund-raiser calendar for all future “markings.”  Along with this item, animal toys and early gift ideas for the holidays will be available for purchase.  You can support this important cause, a safe and secure living space for abandoned and unwanted animals, and also provide Christmas cheer for our two-legged and four-legged friends and family—all at the same event.
A DATE TO REMEMBER:  NOVEMBER 12 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Little Woman Home for Animals OPEN HOUSE.

 Houston Chronicle

Word of Little Woman Home for Animals continues to spread as the October 19 “Ultimate Houston” accompaniment to the Houston Chronicle names Carlos Arreola the “ultimate animal lover”:

Carlos Arreola couldn’t stand to see animals considered “too old,” “too sick” or “too ugly” being put to sleep at local animal shelters. His solution was to open the doors of his Huntsville home. Little Woman Home for Animals, a nonprofit, no-kill shelter, now houses nearly 200 animals, mostly dogs and cats. “If they can’t get adopted, they will stay here,” says the 64-year-old Arreola. “This is going to be their home for the rest of their lives.”

Though Carlos would want the emphasis to be on the animals, he is the heart and soul of Little Woman and does more for its inhabitants than the majority of “animal lovers” could ever manage. His furred and feathered charges do not wait for a bad day or a bout of the flu. Their unending care includes feeding, cleaning, veterinary care, grooming and affection—long after those of us who help out on occasion go home and feel that our hands are full with the five or six animals we have.

Fortunately, there are as many ways to support Little Woman as there are animals living there. Best bet: adopt a beautiful, healthy dog or cat that needs a home and offers unconditional love. Can’t make that kind of commitment? Offer your time or talent. Pretty good carpenter? Leftover building materials? Little Woman needs additional structures for the animals that continue to arrive. Quite the artist? Little Woman plans an art sale to assist with expenses. None of the above? Offer a monetary donation. Any form of assistance is helpful and appreciated. Little Woman Home for Animals is one of Huntsville’s hidden treasures. We are lucky to have it and its proprietor. Spread the word!

The Multipurpose FacilityPhase IV

Having finalized the construction of the cat facility, the kennels and the clinic, in January 2007, Carlos Arreola will initiate construction of the next facility, the multipurpose building.  The function of the facility will be varied.  It will serve as a reception area for potential adoptees to meet their new owners.  The intent is to create a welcoming and comfortable setting for both the pet and the owner to be introduced.  Hopefully, in this environment, the prospective owner will be more inclined to welcome the pet into hers/his own home.  The facility will also be a drop off point when owners bring and pick up their pets after being spayed or neutered.  The pet will then be transported the short distance to the clinic and returned when the surgery is complete.  Other uses will include a gift shop, a meeting center and a reception center.  The approximate cost will be $40,000. Your donations will help to fund this new facility.

 Buster-call about my special needs

Letter To Mikey

Dear Mikey, how are you doing, I’m doing great, my mama rescued me from another family in the neighborhood. I was only 10 weeks old and they were going to have me put down because I was always chewing on something. Now, I’m king of the hill and I sleep in whatever bed I want and my mama cooks for me, I eat whatever they eat. I’m sure happy for you; Mr. Arreola looks like a very kind fellow.

Love,

 Indian Legend

There is an Indian legend which says when a human dies there is a bridge they must cross to enter into heaven. At the head of that bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based upon what they know of this person, decide which human may cross the bridge… and which are turned away.
